Curtimade Dairy receives EPA Envrionmental Award
The United States Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Pacific Southwest Region (Region 9) recognized the dairy for its dedication to improving the environment. The dairy operation was recently named a 2013 Environmental Champion by EPA Region 9 for its significant contributions to protecting and conserving environmental resources. What started as a 32 milking cow operation has now transformed into three dairies with a combined total of over 5,000 milk cows and over 4,000 acres of farm land. The founder of this operation was Miro Curti, an immigrant from Italy. He married his wife, Domenica in 1912 and they started their dairy and farming operation to Waukena in 1913. They had five children that all worked on the family farm – Lilia, Amelio, Elvira, Italo, and Leo. Curtimade Dairy is undergoing a few changes at the moment. We are in the process of selling our Holstein herd and building up our Jersey herd. Yes, this makes a huge change for all of us but we are embracing it with excitement! So, don’t be alarmed if you have heard or seen that Curtimade Dairy is “selling out.” We are transitioning this year and hope to be milking 2,500 beautiful Jersey cows by the end of 2013.
